Source
Whether coming from the tiny mandarin or the exotic yuzu, citrus essential oils are gently extracted by cold-pressing the fruit peels, a process normally reserved for carrier oils.
Skin Benefits
Aside from their energising scent, citrus peel oils have a variety of skin benefits for every skin type. For those with mature skin, citrus oils provide a skin firming effect, and protection from free radical damage with the help of the antioxidant compound limonene. Those with oily skin will appreciate citrus oils’ clarifying effect and pore tightening properties, as well as some anti-bacterial capabilities.
A Note On Phototoxicity
With some citrus peel oils, there is concern that they could make the skin more sensitive to sun exposure when left on the skin. However, our research team is fully aware of the risk and is able to control for it. For example, the bergamot peel oil that we use in our formulas is free of bergapten, the compound that causes sun sensitivity, and is therefore perfectly safe, and even beneficial to the skin. Through GCMS testing we are able to identify the amount of phototoxic compounds in our lemon and grapefruit oils and are able to ensure that we use them at a low enough quantity so that they do not pose any risk.
